Two of the suspects, identified as Komakech Stephen and Byamukama, are currently in custody at Central Police Station Kampala, while the third suspect (whose details were not immediately available as of press time) is being held at Jinja Road Police Station.
This report was confirmed by Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owiyesigyire, in a police statement on Tuesday afternoon.
Owiyesigyire stated, "The Territorial Police at Central Police Station and Jinja Road have launched investigations into an incident that occurred earlier today, on September 12, 2023, at approximately 9:00 AM in the Civil Parish of Kampala Central."
According to Owiyesigyire, the incident occurred when a large group of unidentified Boda Boda riders, numbering over 100, unlawfully gathered and blocked several roads, including Jinja Road, Kampala Road, Yusuf Luke Road, and Mukwano Road. He added that they also threw stones at traffic officers managing the junction near Jinja Road traffic lights.
In response, the police swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of three individuals at the scene.
Owiyesigyire explained that the incident was linked to a fatal accident that took place earlier around 8:50 AM on 8th Street in the Industrial Area of Kampala. The accident involved a motorcycle registered as UFP 327T, ridden by the victim, Mr. Kimbowa Steven, which was struck by an oncoming vehicle, a Hino with registration UBG 834 M, owned by Homelkin company.
"The Hino driver, identified as Atuhaire Emmy, initially left the scene but was subsequently apprehended by Kabalagala Police. Atuhaire Emmy has provided his statement regarding the events leading up to the accident," Owiyesigyire elaborated.
He mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident and called upon all parties involved to remain patient during this process.
In the meantime, the deceased Boda Boda rider, Mr. Kimbowa Steven, has been transported to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, and traffic flow in the affected areas has been restored to normal.
The police assured that further updates on this matter would be provided as soon as additional information becomes available.
